FLORENCE, SC – The unbeaten Francis Marion University women’s tennis team moved up one position to fourth, while the Patriot men’s tennis team dropped one slot to 15th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II national polls released on Wednesday (March 3).
Francis Marion is one of 16 schools to have both its tennis programs ranked in this week’s Top 25. The FMU women’s and men’s squads were ranked fifth and 14th respectively in the 2009 fall ITA polls.
The Patriot women’s No.4 listing is the highest-ever for the 40-year-old program. Coming off a 2009 campaign that saw FMU post a 20-5 record and make a second-straight appearance in the Division II’s round of Sweet 16, Francis Marion has won its opening five matches of 2010, and is 2-0 in the tough Peach Belt Conference.
The FMU men are currently 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the PBC, with the one loss being to a Top 20 opponent. The Patriot men have earned 13 NCAA national tournament invitations in the past 15 years.
Both Patriot squads are heading into a very busy weekend. The Patriots will play at PBC foe Georgia College & State University on Friday at 2 p.m. The Bobcats are ranked 11th in the men’s poll and 31st in the women’s poll.
FMU will then play host to Tusculum College on Saturday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts. The Patriots will conclude their weekend by traveling to Sumter’s Palmetto Tennis Center on Sunday to play national-power Lynn University at 10 a.m. The Lynn women are ranked No.1 in the recent poll, while the men are third.
