FMU’s Center of Excellence hosts its first student professional learning and research conference


FLORENCE – More than 100 Francis Marion University students participated in the 2010 Student Professional Learning and Research Conference held in Cauthen Educational Media Center’s Lowrimore Auditorium on campus. 

Sponsored by the Francis Marion University Center of Excellence (COE) to Teach Children of Poverty, the purpose of the conference is to increase awareness of the issues of poverty as they relate to student learning and achievement. The keynote address, break-out and roundtable sessions focused on research-based practices as they relate to the needs and abilities of children of poverty in the following areas:

·        The culture of poverty

·        Family and community partnerships

·        Curriculum design, instructional strategies and assessment

·        Language and literacy

·        The classroom community

·        Teachers of children of poverty as learners, leaders and advocates


This student teacher panel that addressed participants consisted of:

·        Angie Rampey of Florence (Early Childhood Education/Applied)        


Afternoon keynote speakers included Janis McWayne, associate professor of health education and coordinator of health programs at FMU, and the following educators affiliated with the COE:
