FLORENCE, S.C. – Two members of the nationally ranked Francis Marion University women’s tennis team have been selected to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tennis All-Academic Team.
Juniors Sabina Baberadova and Jitka Gavdunova were named to the women’s second team.
The teams are part of the conference’s program that recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for an All-Academic team, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; have achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and completed at least one full academic year at his/her current institution.
Baberadova, a native of Brno, Czech Republic, owns a 3.20 grade point average as a general business major. She is ranked 36th nationally in singles with a 17-2 mark. She is ranked second nationally in doubles with an 18-3 record. She was recently named a second-team All-PBC selection in singles and a first-team pick in doubles. Last fall, she and Tereza Sykorova reached the doubles title match of the ITA National Small College Championships for Division II in Mobile, Ala.
Off the court, she has been named to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll and has served on the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Gavdunova, a native of Vejprty, Czech Republic, is majoring in marketing and has a 3.27 GPA.
She is ranked 34th nationally in singles with a 16-4 record and is ranked 13th nationally in doubles with a 19-2 mark.
She has also been named to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll, and was an All-Conference and All-America selection in 2009 as a sophomore.
The 13th-ranked Patriots are 16-5 and will play their opening match in the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Savannah, Ga. FMU will face 22nd-ranked Flagler College (14-7) at 2 p.m. in a semifinal match of the Southeast Regional.
