FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University cross country coach Mark Bluman has announced the signing of Michael Bigelow of Florence to a national letter of intent to attend FMU and run for the Patriots this fall.
Bigelow, 5-8, is a product of Wilson High School, where he ran for coach Lorletta Rogers.
An All-Region selection last fall, he posted a personal-best 5,000-meter time of 17:55. He placed 38th at the AAA Lower State Championship Meet with a time of 19:26.39 and helped Wilson earn a spot in the AAA state meet.
He was named his squad’s co-most valuable player as a junior.
Bigelow was also a three-year member of the Wilson soccer team, earning All-Region honors as a senior. He was a member of two region championship squads and the Tigers advanced to the AAA state playoffs all three seasons.
“Michael is a very energetic and passionate runner,” said Bluman. “He is also very driven and goal orientated. He will be a nice addition to our program, especially being a local product.”
Francis Marion loses only one senior from its 2009 men’s squad that placed seventh at the Peach Belt Conference Championship Meet and 22nd at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Meet.
