FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University men’s golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced that Kurt Slattery of Taylor Ridge, Ill., and Fredrik Sporck of Horten, Norway, will join the Patriot program this fall.
Slattery, 5-10, has been at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, for the past two seasons and will have two years of eligibility at FMU. Sporck, 5-11, is an incoming freshman.
Slattery recently represented the United States at the 2010 World University Golf Championships in Malaga, Spain. He finished tied for 41st position with a 72-hole score of 304, while the U.S. placed ninth in the team standings.
At Indian Hills, he placed 30th at the 2010 NJCAA Division I Tournament, while the Warriors finished third in the team standings. During this past regular season, he won the Western Kansas Collegiate Tournament and placed second at the Community 1st Credit Union Invitational.
As a freshman, he was named a PING All-American. He tied for 54th at the NJCAA national tournament, while Indian Hills placed fourth. During that first season, he recorded eight Top 10 finishes, including winning the Fun City Classic.
Slattery is a graduate of Rockridge High School, where he qualified for the IHSA Class A state tournament three times and placed sixth as a senior.
Sporck has had success on the Titleist Tour, the highest level of amateur junior golf in Norway.
“I am excited about both golfers,” said Gaynor. “Slattery has experienced success at the junior college level and Sporck has progressively gotten better in the junior ranks. These two will be excellent additions to our program.”
Francis Marion lost two seniors from last year’s squad that compiled a 58-112 record, including two Top-5 finishes. The Patriots are entering their fourth season as a full-fledged Division I members.
