FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University baseball coach Art Inabinet has announced that senior right-handed pitcher Joe Wagstaff of Zebulon, N.C., has transferred from Campbell University to FMU and will join the Patriot program this fall.
Wagstaff, 6-6 and 210-pounds, is currently pitching for the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League.
This past spring at Campbell, he posted a 2-0 record with a 2.89 earned run average in 11 appearances. He was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team.
Prior to attending Campbell, he pitched two seasons at Louisburg College, where he compiled a 7-6 mark and one save in 24 appearances with a 4.39 ERA. He struck out 96 batters in 94.1 innings pitched.
Wagstaff is a graduate of East Wake High School, where he played for coach James Sarver. As a senior, he posted an 8-0 record with a 3.31 ERA.
“Joe is a big, strong, tall, right-handed pitcher,” said Inabinet. “His fastball reaches the upper 80’s, and he has a really good slider that he uses as his out pitch. He will throw for us on the weekends (conference play).”
Francis Marion lost 17 seniors off last year’s 40-14 squad that ended the year ranked 10th nationally and finished second at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional – which the Patriots hosted. Earlier this summer, Inabinet announced the signing of 11 high school seniors.
