FLORENCE – For the 12th year in a row, Francis Marion University students, faculty and staff are organizing to help new freshmen students move into campus housing Saturday, Aug. 21.

Students, faculty and staff volunteers will assist new students and their families by helping unload their vehicles and carrying belongings to the rooms in the residence halls. Other volunteers will help connect computers. Dining services will provide hot dogs, chips, cookies and soft drinks for students, family members and volunteers.

New students are scheduled to check into the residence halls from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Upperclassmen return to campus Sunday, Aug. 22. Nearly 1,500 students will live in university housing during the 2010-2011 school year.

Coordinating the “move in” is Teresa Ramey, FMU’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

"Students who check in to the residence halls on Saturday have a great opportunity to get settled into the campus community at the earliest point," said Ramey, noting that FMU President Fred Carter will again lead the volunteer effort. "The students, faculty and staff volunteers are available on that day to make the transition from home to campus a little easier for both students and their family members.  For incoming freshmen, this day is the beginning of their campus life, and we make every effort to provide a strong foundation for them to build on."

Most students have already pre-registered for the coming year, but for those who haven’t, open registration is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 23.  The first day of classes is Wednesday, Aug. 25, and late registration and drop/add will take place Aug. 24-Aug. 31.
