Patriot Women introduce Soccer Newcomers

Second-year Francis Marion University women’s soccer coach Joel Person has introduced a class of 12 newcomers for the 2010 campaign. These include two transfers and 10 freshmen.

Lauren Vetock, 5-6, Jr., GK, Pasadena, Md. (Shepherd University)

She is a transfer from Division II Shepherd University. In 2009, compiled a 2.11 goals against average, a .785 save percentage, two shutouts, and 135 saves in 19 matches (16 starts). Very athletic. Good shot stopper. Adds collegiate experience to roster. A graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame.

 Deanna Hunt, 5-3, Fr., B-MF, Charleston, SC (West Ashley HS)

A first-year player. In-state product. Very fit. Big upside. Provides us with a good option at either right back or right midfield. Graduate of West Ashley High School, where she played for coach Drew McNeely. Helped her team to a 15-7-1 record as a senior, a #11 state ranking. Played in 2010 North-South Classic. Ranked 15th in her class with 4.0 grade point average. Member of the Interact Club and Beta Club. Also played with Mount Pleasant Soccer Club (91 Elite Girls).

 Amelia Wallace-Zocher, 5-5, Fr., B-MF, Chesapeake, VA (Western Branch HS)

A first-year player. Will provide good minutes at left back. Exceeding expectations. Very athletic. Good on the ball. Uses both feet. Graduate of Western Branch High School, where she played for coach Rebekah Journigan. 2009 first-team All-District. 2009 Scholar-Athlete Award. Also played for the Beach FC 91/92 Piranhas squad.

 Adrienna Osorio-McKenna, 5-7, Sr., MF-F, Florence, SC (Salt Lake Community College)

A first-year player. Very mature player. Has assumed leadership role. One of best all-around athletes on team. Strikes ball well with both feet. Will be one of the team’s main attack threats. Starred at West Florence High School before finishing at Hillcrest High School in Utah. Signed with Brigham Young University in 2006, but was injured and did not play. Later attended Salt Lake Community College (2009-10).

 Megan Roberts, 5-7, Fr., GK, Beaufort, SC (Battery Creek HS)

A first-year player. Walk-on. Adds depth at goalkeeping position. Has athleticism and raw ability. Could develop into a good college keeper. Attended Battery Creek High School. 

Mariel Kaney, 5-6, Fr., MF, Edinburgh, Scotland (University of Glasgow)

A first-year player. High level experience. Played internationally with Scotland’s Under 19 squad. A composed player with technical abilities. Can win the ball in the air. As a center midfielder, can connect the team. A product of James Gillespie’s High School. Also played for the Hibernian Girls & Ladies FC. 

Teri Kourtis, 5-3, Fr., B-MF, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada (Richmond Green SS)

A first-year player. All-Around player who can fill in at many positions. Has had a fantastic pre-season. A graduate of Richmond Green Secondary School, where she played for coach Shaun Dougall. Earned school’s Silver Rattler award. Also named team most valuable player for basketball and volleyball. Also played for the AJAX Storm. 2009 Ontario Cup champions and League OYSL champions. 

Yasmin Bunter, 5-6, Fr., MF, Fleet, England (Farnborough 6th Form)

A first-year player. High quality player. Has played with the Fulham reserves squad. Center midfielder. Good passer. Good strike on the ball. Has a bright future. Product of Farnborough 6th Form, where she played for coach Rob Savory. 10 goals. 3 Player of the Match awards. National Cup semi-finalists. League winners 2009-10. Also attended Calthorpe Park School, and won Coe Trophy for sporting excellence. Was prefect and elected house captain. 

Michelle Brown, 5-3, Fr., F, Waxhaw, NC (Parkwood HS)

A first-year player. Fast. Will see action at the forward spot or as a wide midfielder. Can get behind the defense. Positive upside. A scoring option. Graduate of Parkwood High School, where she played for coach Wade Morton. Team was 6-11-2 in 2010 and played in the 3A state playoffs. Four-year starter.  2-time All-Conference, All-Region, and All-Union County. Also a four-year starter on the basketball court. 3-time All-Conference and scored over 1,000 points for the Lady Rebels.    

Jordan Allen, 5-7, Fr., B-MF, York, SC (Clover HS)

A first-year player. Has had a great pre-season. Natural left-footer. Can play all along the left side. Very athletic. Crosses the ball well. A graduate of Clover High School, where she played for coach Kelsey Geary. 2010 3-AAAA All-Region. Helped Lady Blue Eagles shared 2010 region regular-season championship. 2010 Viking Cup All-Tournament Team. Won state title with CESA Girls 18 squad. 

Kristina Marra, 5-3, Fr., B, Oakville, Ontario, Canada (King’s Christian Collegiate)

A first-year player. Suffered a season-ending knee injury in a pre-season exhibition. Very bright spot in the back. Exceeded expectations. Great communication skills. Quick. Tackles ball well. Good 1v1 defender. Graduate of the King’s Christian Collegiate school, where she played for coach James Walraven. Also played with the Dixie Club. 

Rebecca Dietrich, 5-8, Fr., MF, Cincinnati, OH (Oak Hills HS)

A first-year player. Still recovering from ACL injury suffered in high school. Good in the air. Tough 1v1 defender. Will play as a center back or defensive center midfield. Graduate of Oak Hills High School, where she played for coach Chuck Laumann. 2-year starter.   Also played with the Cincinnati Hammers club. 2008 MRL Premiere Division champs. 2008 participants in U.S. Youth Soccer Region II championships.
