Busy weekend for Patriot sports

FLORENCE, SC – All six of the Francis Marion University fall sports programs will be in action this weekend, with two squads playing at home.

The Francis Marion men’s soccer team will open its Peach Belt Conference schedule by playing host to 21st-ranked and unbeaten Clayton State University (5-0-0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The FMU volleyball team, off to its best start in five seasons, will entertain Augusta State University and Belmont Abbey College for a tri-match on Saturday in the Smith University Center. The Patriots will meet ASU at 1 p.m. and Belmont Abbey at 5 p.m., with Augusta State playing the Crusaders in between the FMU matches at 3 p.m.

Admission to these contests is free.

The Francis Marion men’s and women’s cross country squads will compete in the Asics-Winthrop University Invitational Meet, Saturday morning in Rock Hill. The 8,000-meter men’s race will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s 5,000-meter event at 9:45 a.m.

The Francis Marion men’s golf team will participate in the third-annual University of Maryland Intercollegiate Tournament, Saturday and Sunday at the River Marsh Golf Club at Hyatt Regency Resort in Cambridge, Md. The 54-hole event will include two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday at the par-71, 6,801-yard course. The 15-team field includes Maryland, Akron, FMU, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Navy, UNC-Wilmington, Old Dominion, Penn, Penn State, USC-Aiken, Toledo, William & Mary, and Xavier.

Earlier this week, Francis Marion placed 14th at the season-opening Springhill Suites Intercollegiate Tournament, played at the Country Club of South Carolina.

The Patriot women’s soccer team will conclude a two-match road swing through the mountains of western North Carolina by playing at UNC Asheville on Sunday at 2 p.m.
