FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University senior swingman Simel Boyd has been named a pre-season honorable mention All-American by the Sporting News.
The 6-6 native of Ridgeville, S.C., was one of only two Peach Belt Conference players selected, and one of only six chosen from the Southeast Region of Division II.
Last season, Boyd led the FMU men in scoring (12.2 points per game), rebounding (6.6 rebounds per game), and minutes played (28.0 minutes per game). He connected on 52.5 percent of his field goal attempts, eighth-best in the Peach Belt Conference, and was second on the team in steals and blocked shots. He scored in double figures 19 times, including two 20-point games, and recorded three double-doubles.
For his accomplishments, he was named to the second-team All-PBC squad.
The 2008 PBC Freshman of the Year, Boyd has scored 683 points and grabbed 386 rebounds in 82 career contests.
Boyd helped lead the FMU men to an 18-10 record in 2009-10, the second-highest win total in 17 seasons. Francis Marion returns eight lettermen from that squad for the 2010-11 season that opens Nov. 16 at home against Allen University. The Patriots will also play an exhibition game at the College of Charleston on Nov. 5.
