FLORENCE--- Viola Hendley, itinerant teacher for autism in Richland One Schools, has been honored by the Francis Marion University Department of Psychology with an outstanding alumni award.
Hendley received the Professional Psychology Award for 2010-11 at a reception held today on the FMU campus.
She earned a bachelor of science in psychology in 1980 and an M.Ed. in 1984 both from FMU.
National Board Certified, Hendley has been in the field of education for nearly 32 years, 30 of which have been with Richland One School District. She coordinates and leads student-centered Individualized Education Planning for 30 students at four different schools ranging from elementary to high. Hendley has worked directly with students with autism, their families and private providers, including health care providers and educational support staff.
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Hendley has worked collaboratively with parents and professionals to develop educational programs for students with disabilities that ensure a free appropriate education is provided to each student.
Hendley is married to Scott Hendley and has one child, Beth Nichols Levy.
