FMU Men tackle Falcons in PBC Soccer Tournament

FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will take to the road on Tuesday (Nov. 2) to face 24th-ranked University of Montevallo in the opening round of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. local (Central) time.

The top eight teams in the conference standings advanced to postseason play with the first round of the tournament on Tuesday evening with the higher seed hosting. The four winning teams advance to the semifinals and finals Friday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 7, at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., as part of the PBC Fall Festival.

Francis Marion is the fifth seed with a 7-9-1 overall record, while Montevallo (15-2-1) is the fourth seed.

The Falcons beat FMU 3-1 back on Oct. 2. Since that match, Francis Marion finished the regular season by winning five of its final eight matches. Montevallo leads the all-time series 3-0-0.

Senior forward Chris Foltanski leads FMU with 14 points on four goals and six assists, while freshman forward Alex Blandin has scored five goals. Senior goalkeeper Clark Richeson has played every minute in goal for the Patriots this season and had registered a 1.43 goals against average while leading the conference in saves (84).

Francis Marion is 11-17-2 all-time in PBC Tournament play, including winning the 1999 and 2008 Tournament titles.

Sixth-ranked Clayton State University (15-2) is the top seed and will play host to eighth-seeded USC Aiken (2-10-2). Lander University (11-6-0) is the second seed and will entertain seventh-seeded UNC Pembroke (5-8-4), while 16th-ranked Flagler College (12-3-1) is the third seed and will play host to sixth-seeded North Georgia College & State University (8-5-4).

Montevallo won six of seven matches to close out the regular season and the Falcons rank as the second-highest scoring team in the PBC at 2.61 goals per match.
