Degrees awarded at FMU commencement exercises Dec. 18

FLORENCE, S.C. – Three-hundred-and-three degrees were awarded during commencement exercises at Francis Marion University Saturday, Dec. 18.  

These included 258 undergraduate degrees and 45 graduate degrees awarded by Francis Marion.  

Five FMU students completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or higher and received their degrees summa cum laude (with highest honors). They were Elisabeth Lou Dobek of Sterling Heights, Mich.; Jeana Nicole Dunn of Conway; Brett Legrand Lynch of Florence; Heather Elizabeth Patterson of Nichols; and Brittany Elizabeth Sanders of Johnsonville.  

Receiving degrees magna cum laude (with high honor) were six students who completed degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average between 3.75 and 3.89. They were Joshua O’Neal Davidson of Effingham; George Edwards III of Latta; Cindy Janell Nettles of Scranton; Zachary Ryan Nickerson of Camden; Eunice I. Rabon of Marion; and Cadie Elizabeth Raines of Florence. 

Twenty students completed degree requirements with a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74 and received their degrees cum laude (with honor). They were Mary Elizabeth Belk, Kimberly Jean Bruce, Andrew Scott Crawford, Sylvia Marie Davis, Frances Kathleen Gootman, William Moore Kirkland, Dorothy Rushton Matthews and Timothy Arthur Streit of Florence; Vance Lee Evans of Hartsville; Arnold Gonzalez Jr. of Pageland; Jamie Lynn Holmes of Monroe, Wash.; Minday Alaina Kimrey of Hemingway; Bethany Lynn Luhman of Pamplico; Staci Lynn Neel of New Zion; Jessica Lynn O’Leary of St. Louis, Mo.; Mallory Denise Proctor of Dillon; Magen Elizabeth Rice of Laurens; Angela Marguerite Salem of Akron, Ohio; Courtney Lynn Thiry of Summerville; and Alyson Richie Thompson of Clover. 

Honorary Doctor of Humanities degrees were conferred upon Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., Attorney Mark W. Buyck Jr. of Florence and Bishop Michael Blue of Marion. Riley delivered the commencement address. 

A native of Charleston, Riley was first elected mayor in December 1975 and is serving an unprecedented ninth term. Under his leadership, the racial harmony and progress in Charleston have increased and the city has achieved a substantial decrease in crime, experienced a remarkable revitalization of its historic downtown business district, and seen the creation and growth of Spoleto Festival U.S.A., built the beautiful Waterfront Park, developed nationally-acclaimed affordable housing, and experienced unprecedented growth in size and population. He has led a city government with an impressive record of innovation in public safety, housing, arts and culture, children’s issues, the creation of park and other public spaces, and economic revitalization and development.                                                                    

Riley has held numerous national leadership positions and received many awards and distinctions. He was given the Outstanding Mayors Award by the National Urban Coalition, the Distinguished Citizen Award by the National Association of Realtors and named the 1991 Municipal Leader of the Year by American City & County. Riley has received the Order of the Palmetto, been named South Carolinian of the Year, and was given the 1982 Verner Award by the S.C. Arts Commission for outstanding contributions to the arts. 

He graduated from The Citadel in 1964 and the University of South Carolina’s School of Law in 1967. In 1968, Riley was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives, where he served for six years. He and his wife Charlotte have two sons, Joe and Bratton. 

A St. Matthews native and longtime Florence resident, Buyck is a senior partner and chairman of Florence’s oldest law firm, Willcox, Buyck & Williams P.A., founded in 1895. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with an A.S. in journalism in 1956 and its law school in 1959. 

Buyck is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts in South Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has been honored by two South Carolina governors with the Order of the Palmetto; received the prestigious honor of the Judge Hemphill Award for distinguished service to the profession and the public by the S.C. Defense Trial Attorneys Association; and received the Compleat Lawyer Award by the USC Law School. He was the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Ralph King Anderson Jr., Award, for his contribution to the character and quality of the legal profession. 

He is a member of the USC Board of Trustees and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation and the Board of Directors of Carolinas Hospital System, the Bank of Clarendon and IRIX Pharmaceuticals Inc. He and his wife, Julia, have three children, Mark W. Buyck III, Hugh W. Buyck and Julie B. McKissick.

 

Blue was born in North Carolina and was reared in Sellers. He is the founding pastor of The Door of Hope Christian Church in Marion and is the founding prelate of the Christian Covenant of Ministries consisting of 40 churches in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He is also an English teacher at Marion High School, a position he has held for 24 years.

Blue was ordained to the bishopric in December 1997, and served as an assistant diocesan and a diocesan (1998-2000) of the Northeast Diocese of the Born Again Church.

In February 1992, Blue and his wife Malinda became the founding pastors of The Door of Hope Christian Church with only 34 members consisting mostly of children. Today, the local Ministry and Worship Center, dedicated in 2001, has become a beacon of faith for nearly 1,000 members and countless others. 

Blue is a member of the state senator’s advisory council; the Superintendent’s Community Advisory Committee; S.C. Department of Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Services – S.C. Faith Advisory Network; and WELVISTA development committee. He is also a member of the S.C. State Board of Education for the 12th Judicial District. 

In 1985, Blue received a B.A. in English from FMU. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity from Cathedral Bible College in Myrtle Beach in May 2010. He and his wife have two children, Michala and Michael II.
