FLORENCE, S.C. – After a Christmas break, the Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will return to action on Thursday (Dec. 30) when the Patriots play at Queens University of Charlotte.
The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Queen’s Ovens Athletic Center.
Francis Marion owns a 6-2 record and is only two end-of-game possessions away from a perfect 8-0 mark – losing 66-64 at USC Aiken and 67-65 in a neutral site game against Shaw University.
Senior Shannon Singleton-Bates leads Francis Marion in scoring at 18.9 points per game. The South Norwalk, Conn., native is 13th on the Patriots’ all-time scoring list with 1,366 points, 31 shy of 12th place which is occupied by former guard Gwen Canty (1981-85).
Sophomore guard Courtney Mealing is averaging 17.1 ppg, while 5-10 senior point guard Robin Colbert is adding 11.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 4.3 steals per game.
As a team, the Patriots are ranked 13th nationally in scoring offense (81.9 ppg). Queens (3-4) is allowing only 59.4 ppg, but is scoring only 62.6 ppg.
The Royals are led by 5-8 senior forward Marissa Hudley, who is averaging a double-double at 14.1 ppg and 10.1 rpg. Hartsville High School product Shakaria Hamlin, a 5-8 senior guard, is averaging 8.7 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
This will be the first-ever meeting between FMU and Queens.
Following Thursday’s contest, both the FMU men’s and women’s teams will return to Peach Belt Conference play on Sunday, Jan. 2, at UNC Pembroke. The women’s game will tip-off at 1:30 p.m. and the men’s contest at 3:30 p.m.
