FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University golf team will play host to the sixth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 21-22), on Hilton Head Island. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.
The Wexford Plantation course measures 6,828 yards and is a par 72 layout.
This year’s field includes Francis Marion, University of Connecticut, Davidson College, DePaul University, Elon University, Furman University, Indiana University, Ohio University, Presbyterian College, University of Richmond, Samford University, USC Aiken, Western Carolina University, and College of William & Mary.
USCA won the 2006 and 2009 events, while Elon won the 2008 tournament. The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga captured the 2007 title and Wake Forest University won the 2010 tournament.
The event will begin a six-tournament spring schedule for FMU. The Patriots, in their fourth season as an NCAA Division I program, played five tournaments in the fall.
Sophomores Kenneth Svanum and Sebastian Backlund paced Francis Marion during the fall season with stroke averages of 73.6 and 76.3 respectively.
