FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women’s softball team will play its home opener on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 13) when the Patriots entertain 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University for a non-conference doubleheader.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on the FMU Softball Field.
Francis Marion opened its season with three wins at last weekend’s Early Bird Tournament in Aiken. Junior centerfielder Destinea Schneider led the Patriots with five hits, while senior left fielder Chelle Phillips was 4-for-11 with two doubles and four runs batted in.
Junior right-hander Kayla Ellingsen picked up two complete-game wins and is expected to take the mound for Sunday’s home opener.
Lenoir-Rhyne was 53-9 last season and is the 2011 preseason favorite to win the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears open their season at UNC Pembroke on Saturday before traveling to Florence on Sunday.
FMU was among the other schools receiving votes in the preseason NFCA Top 25 poll. Francis Marion trails 8-7 in the all-time series, but the Patriots beat Lenoir-Rhyne 3-1 last season in Florence.
Other Francis Marion athletic teams will also be in action this weekend.
The nationally ranked Patriot men’s and women’s tennis teams will play host to Barton College on Saturday at 1 p.m. The FMU baseball team will play a two-game series at Pfeiffer University with single games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. each day.
The FMU women’s basketball team (15-6, 8-5) will play at second-ranked Clayton State University (23-0, 12-0) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Patriot men (14-7, 7-6) facing the Lakers (16-7, 7-5) at 3:30 p.m.
