FMU Men travel to #5 ASU in PBC Tournament first round on Tuesday

FLORENCE, SC – The fourth-seeded Francis Marion University men’s basketball team will travel west on Interstate 20 to play fifth-ranked and top-seeded Augusta State University in a first-round Peach Belt Conference Tournament game, Tuesday evening (March 1) at 7 p.m.

Follow all the game action and results through the FMU athletics website at www.fmupatriots.com.

Admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Students from PBC schools will be admitted free with their school ID.

Francis Marion finished the regular season with a 16-10 record, the program’s third consecutive winning campaign – something that has not happened since the early 1990’s (1989-1993). The Patriots finished tied for third in the East Division standings at 9-9.

Junior 6-5 forward Liki Turner leads the Patriots in scoring (16.7 ppg) and is second in rebounding (7.6 rpg). He ranks fourth in the PBC in scoring, sixth in rebounding, and 11th in field goal percentage (51.3%).

Three other Patriots are also scoring in double digits: freshman guard Evrik Gary (11.7 ppg), senior forward Simel Boyd (11.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg), and senior swingman Dominique Coleman (11.2 ppg). Boyd is 19 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

Augusta State captured the PBC regular-season crown with a 25-3 overall record and a 15-3 conference mark. The Jaguars own the fourth-longest active home-court winning streak at 45 games.

FMU lost a pair of agonizingly close games to ASU during the regular season. The Patriots led by 12 points with 4:13 remaining in Florence on Jan. 8 before falling 62-61, and held an eight-point advantage with 3:50 left in Augusta on Feb. 19 before losing 66-64.

Francis Marion leads the conference in scoring offense at 81.3 ppg, while the Jaguars lead in scoring defense, allowing only 59.2 ppg.

Augusta State is led by 6-4 senior guard George Johnson with a 16.0 points per game average.

ASU leads the all-time series 34-9.

Tuesday’s winner advances to the tournament semifinals to be held on Saturday (March 5) in Aiken at the USC Aiken Convocation Center. This winner will play the Georgia College/University of Montevallo winner in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. The tournament title game is set for Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
