Patriot pair named to PBC MBB All-Academic Team

AUGUSTA, GA – Francis Marion University senior center Mindaugas Petreikis and junior center Andrew Smith have both been named to the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic Team for 2010-11.

The team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be either a starter or significant contributor, have achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and completed at least one full academic year at his current institution.

Smith, a native of South Milwaukee, Wis., has a 3.50 grade point average as a computer science major. He is a member of the FMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll last year, and is a two-time member of the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll.

On the court this past season, Smith started 26 contests and averaged 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He connected on 52.7 percent of his field goal attempts – seventh-best in the Peach Belt – and shared the team lead with 17 blocked shots.

Petreikis, a native of Siauliai, Lithuania, has recorded a 3.87 GPA as an economics major. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society, and earned a 2010 Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award. Like Smith, he was named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll last year and has twice been selected to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll.

The 6-9 post player averaged 0.7 points and 0.9 rebounds per game while battling an injury during the regular season.

FMU finished this past year with a 16-11 record, the program’s third consecutive winning season.
