FLORENCE, S.C. – For the third time in five weeks, Francis Marion University right-handed pitcher Jeffrey Stoner has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week. It also marks the fifth time this season a Patriot has earned that first-year player award.
Stoner’s four-hit complete-game win over 10th-ranked UNC Pembroke on Monday afternoon capped a 4-0 week for Francis Marion that saw the Patriots never trail over the 36 innings.
Francis Marion is now 33-10 overall and ranked sixth nationally heading into Wednesday night’s (April 20) home finale against local-rival Coker College.
Stoner threw 113 pitches in the 8-1 win on Monday. He struck out six and walked only two.
The win pushed the Martinez, Ga., native’s season mark to 6-0, the top unbeaten mark in the Peach Belt. He owns a 2.22 earned run average and opponents are batting only .198 against him – second-best in the conference. In 11 appearances this year, he has registered 41 strikeouts and only 13 walks in 56.2 innings.
He was an All-State performer at Lakeside High School.
