FLORENCE, S.C. – For the second time in three weeks, Francis Marion University right-handed pitcher Jeffrey Stoner has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week. It also marks the fourth time this season a Patriot has earned that first-year player award.
The Patriots are 26-9 overall and ranked 15th nationally heading into a Tuesday night (April 5) non-conference contest against St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
Stoner started the final game of the PBC weekend series against Lander University this past Sunday. He recorded the win with seven shutout innings. The Martinez, Ga., native allowed only five hits while striking out six and walking two in a 6-0 FMU victory.
That win pushed his season record to 5-0, the second-best unbeaten mark in the Peach Belt. He also stands second in the conference in batting average against (.201). Right-handers are hitting only .175 against him. In nine appearances this year, he has a 2.16 earned run average with 34 strikeouts and only eight walks in 41.2 innings.
