FLORENCE – Sheron Jacobs of Florence and Ben Strickland of Fair Bluff, N.C., have been named outstanding staff employees of the year at Francis Marion University.
The awards were presented July 20 during the staff awards luncheon, which also honored FMU employees for length of state service. Jacobs is director of telecommunications and asset management and Strickland is supervisor of maintenance support and the maintenance pool.
Jacobs has been employed at FMU for 32 years and Strickland nearly 20 years. They both were cited for their dedication to their jobs and for service above and beyond the call of duty. They both were FMU President Luther F. Carter presented Jacobs and Strickland with plaques and $1,000 checks in recognition of winning this annual award for employees.
As a child of military parents, Jacobs traveled and lived in many places. She attended Winthrop University and eventually made Florence her home where she worked as an office administrator.
A Green Sea native, Strickland worked as a farmer, logger, painter and roofer before beginning his career at FMU. In 2007, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on management.
Thomas L. Beaty of Florence, assistant director of purchasing; Brinda A. Jones of assistant vice president for financial services; and Joseph A. Sallenger of Florence, manager of Fine Arts, were cited for 30 years of state service.
Employees honored for 20 years of service include: Sammie Chandler of Florence, central receiving/warehouse assistant; James McLeod of Scranton, master craftsman; Brenda G. Short of Florence, lead custodian; Steven Sims of Marion, circulation manager; and Perry T. Wilson of Darlington, director of admissions.
Employees recognized for 10 years of service were: Mark D. Bluman of Florence, men and women’s cross country coach and Athletics Department bus manager; Robert H. Collins of Mullins, estate groundskeeper; Ronald D. Hall of Florence, materials services assistant; Harriet H. Nolan of Clio, student services counselor for Registrar’s Office; and Jane M. Snowden of Mullins, financial assistance counselor.
Eight employees who are retiring from FMU were also recognized – Mary Lynn Batson of Marion, coordinator of class, compensation and employment (15 years); Richard J. Floyd of Florence, craftsman supervisor in plumbing (26 years); Brunson Gibbs of Florence, lead custodian (20 years); Diana L. Gibson of Florence, administrative associate in the School of Education (21); Mary Mabe-Kulesa of Florence, administrative associate in the School of Education (12); Martha Pee of Marion, custodian; and Loretta K. Spears of Pamplico, senior library technical assistant in cataloging.
