Patriots Host Golf Tournament, Monday and Tuesday at CCSC

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University golf team will play host to its 27th-annual intercollegiate tournament, the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 12-13), at the Country Club of South Carolina.

The 54-hole event will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Play will begin on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The CCSC course is a par 72 layout measured at 7,062 yards.

The tournament field includes FMU, Appalachian State University, Charleston Southern University, College of Charleston, Elon University, Furman University, Gardner-Webb University, Georgia Southern University, Longwood University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, Samford University, USC Aiken, Western Carolina University, and defending tournament champion Georgia College.

This will be FMU’s season opening tournament for 2011-2012.

The Patriot playing roster will include senior Andrew Weir (79.00 stroke average in 2010-11); juniors Sebastian Backlund (75.37), Taylor Banks (transfer from USC Lancaster), Travis Gantt (78.26) and Kenneth Svanum (74.82); sophomore Fredrik Sporck (78.54); and freshman Lucas Crisp (Gothensburg, Sweden), Austin Frick (Myrtle Beach, SC), and John Michael Schaffer (Sumter, SC).

“We are looking forward to starting the season, and it is especially nice to have the opportunity to begin on our home course,” said FMU head coach Mark Gaynor. “We have a deeper, but younger squad for 2011-12. This year’s team includes four Palmetto State products. We have good leadership with the returnees, and all of the young men have been through a good summer of competition.”

The Springhill Suites by Marriott is located at 2670 Hospitality Boulevard near the Florence Civic Center and the intersection of Interstate Highways 95 and 20.
