FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University freshman Jonathan Hain won the men’s singles B flight at this past weekend’s USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Tournament, hosted by FMU at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
Hain, native of Aathen, Germany, went 6-0 and defeated Henric Falkenberg of Mount Olive College 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.
Two other Patriots reached the semifinal rounds of their respective flights. Freshman Luke Bateup reached the semifinals of the men’s singles B flight and narrowly missed an all Patriot final with Hain, while senior Jitka Gavdunova advanced to the women’s singles A flight semifinals.
Juniors Mona Blauen and Tereza Baranova both reached the quarterfinal round of the women’s singles A flight, while sophomore Kimberley Hurter advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s B flight.
In doubles play, Hurter and junior Kerry Hall reached the semifinals of the women’s B flight, while the duos of Gavdunova/Blauen and Baranova/Julia Graf both advanced to the quarterfinals of the A flight.
Hain and senior Jack Bishop reached the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles B flight, while junior Alex Caspari and freshman Gavin Davison advanced to the quarters of the A flight.
The Francis Marion men posted a 10-8 mark last season, earned the program’s 15th NCAA Tournament invitation in the past 17 seasons, and ended the season ranked 17th nationally. The Patriot women concluded their 2010 campaign with an 11-7 record and were ranked 30th in the final national poll.
