FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University’s Faculty Athletic Representative, Dr. D. Allen Clabo, has been selected to attend the first-ever Division II Faculty Athletics Representatives Advanced Leadership Institute, Oct. 14-16, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Clabo, a professor of chemistry at FMU, is beginning his seventh year as the FAR for the Patriot athletics program.
He is one of 16 FARs from across the nation chosen to attend the institute, with the task of developing a model faculty athletic representative document. The institute will also encourage FARs to advocate more for college athletics.
There is currently no document that lays out the best practices that can enable success of these representatives, and there is no expressed distinction between expectations among Division I, II or III FARs.
A native of Columbia, Clabo earned B.S. degrees in chemistry and physics (magna cum laude) from the University of Richmond and the Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of California (Berkeley).
In 2006, he attended an FAR Fellows Institute.
The Faculty Athletic Representative, working in conjunction with the compliance coordinator, is responsible for the oversight of the academic eligibility of all student-athletes. Among his duties, the FAR administers annual recruiting tests to coaches, participates in mandated NCAA education sessions at the beginning of each semester and administers exit interviews to seniors at the end of the year, serves as a liaison between the faculty and athletic department, and reports all secondary and major violations to the NCAA or conference office.
