Francis Marion hunts familiar fowl in PBC Tourney

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University will face a familiar opponent in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday (Nov. 1) evening when the Patriots play at the University of Montevallo in a 8 p.m. (eastern time) kick off.

This will mark the third consecutive season Francis Marion has faced the Falcons in an opening-round contest. Montevallo prevailed 2-1 in overtime in 2009 and the Falcons won 2-0 last season en route to winning the 2010 tournament title.

Francis Marion (4-12-1) enters the tournament as the seventh seed, however the Patriots upset the then 21st-ranked Falcons 2-0 in their regular-season match-up on Oct. 15 in Florence.

Montevallo ended its regular season with a 10-3-4 record and earned the second seed in the PBC Tournament.

Three other first-round matches will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m., all to be hosted by the higher seed.  Top-seeded and 17th-ranked Flagler College (12-3-2) hosts eighth-seeded USC Aiken (3-9-4), while third-seeded Lander University (8-6-2) entertains sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke (10-4-2), and fourth-seeded North Georgia College & State University (9-6-1) hosts fifth-seeded Clayton State University (9-7-0).

The first-round winners will advance to the PBC Final Four on Friday (Nov. 4) at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.  The championship match will be played on Sunday (Nov. 6), also at Blanchard Woods.

Francis Marion is led in scoring by sophomore forward Alex Blandin, who ranks second in the conference with nine goals scored. Freshman goalkeeper Nick Lucido, who owns a 2.36 goals against average, will likely mind the net for FMU on Tuesday. He was in goal for the Oct. 15 shutout during which he recorded four saves.

Francis Marion has an all-time PBC Tournament record of 11-18-2, including the 2008 and 1999 tournament championships.
