FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior midfielder Chuy Cruz has been named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of his team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor, achieve a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and have completed at least one full academic year at his current institution.
The 5-4 native of Austin, Texas, played in all 18 matches (with 15 starts) this past season and tallied one goal and one assist on 16 shots.
In the classroom, Cruz owns a 3.682 grade point average as an accounting major. As a sophomore, his first season at Francis Marion, he was named to both the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll. He is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, national college athlete honor society, and he earned an ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2011.
Francis Marion finished the 2011 campaign with a 4-13-1 record.
Cruz played his freshman season at High Point University before transferring to FMU in 2010. He is a product of Akins High School, where he was a four-time All-District performer. He also played for the Lonestar Soccer Club and its U.S. Development Academy squad.
Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 30 NCAA Division II National Championships. The PBC includes 13 member institutions in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.
