FLORENCE, S.C. – After a Christmas break, the Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will return to action on Friday (Dec. 30) when the Patriots play host to Saint Augustine’s College. The game will tip-off at 4 p.m. in the Smith University Center.
Francis Marion has won its past two games to even its season mark at 4-4. Saint Augustine’s is 5-4, but has lost its last three road games. FMU has won 31 of its last 35 regular-season match-ups with non-conference opponents, and the Patriots are 51-10 in their last 61 home games.
FMU leads the all-time series with Saint Augustine’s 5-0, but this will be only the second meeting between the two programs over the past 10 seasons.
Sophomore guards Brittany Christian and Emilee Dunton lead the Patriots in scoring with averages of 11.5 and 11.0 points per game respectively. Junior point guard Carmella Thompson is averaging 8.6 ppg and stands fourth in the Peach Belt Conference in both assists per game (4.4) and rebounding (10.0 rpg).
As a team, the Patriots are holding opponents to 36.1 percent field goal shooting and 58.9 ppg.
Saint Augustine’s is led by 6-1 senior center Keyona Bryant, who averages 18.2 ppg and 8.4 rpg and is connecting on 55.0 percent of her field goal attempts. The Lady Falcons are averaging 71.8 ppg while allowing 60.0 ppg.
Following the New Year, both the FMU men’s and women’s teams will return to Peach Belt Conference play with three consecutive home doubleheaders beginning with a Jan. 4 twinbill against USC Aiken.
