FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior midfielder Chuy Cruz has garnered honorable mention College Division Scholar All-South Region accolades for the recent 2011 season.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have started 50 percent of his team’s matches and be a significant contributor, achieve a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and be at least a junior in academic standing.
The 5-4 native of Austin, Texas, played in all 18 matches (with 15 starts) this past season and tallied one goal and one assist on 16 shots. Following the season, he was named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team.
In the classroom, Cruz owns a 3.733 grade point average as an accounting major. As a sophomore, his first season at Francis Marion, he was named to both the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll. He is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, national college athlete honor society, and he earned an ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2011.
Francis Marion finished the 2011 campaign with a 4-13-1 record.
Cruz played his freshman season at High Point University before transferring to FMU in 2010. He is a product of Akins High School, where he was a four-time All-District performer. He also played for the Lonestar Soccer Club and its U.S. Development Academy squad.
