FMU hosts 7th Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Golf Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University golf team will play host to the seventh-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 20-21), on Hilton Head Island. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.

The Wexford Plantation course, which underwent extensive renovations in 2011 (overseen by the Arnold Palmer Design Company), measures 6,828 yards and is a par 72 layout.

This year’s field includes Francis Marion, Davidson College, DePaul University, Elon University, Furman University, Georgia State University, University of Hartford, University of Louisville, Marshall University, Ohio University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, University of Richmond, Samford University, USC Aiken, Western Carolina University, and College of William & Mary.

USCA won the 2006 and 2009 events, while Elon won the 2008 tournament. The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga captured the 2007 title, Wake Forest University won the 2010 tournament, and Indiana University captured last year’s title.

The event will begin a six-tournament spring schedule for FMU. The Patriots, in their fifth season as an NCAA Division I program, played five tournaments in the fall and recorded four Top-10 finishes highlighted by a fifth-place showing at WCU’s Hummingbird Intercollegiate.

Juniors Sebastian Backlund and Kenneth Svanum paced Francis Marion during the fall season with stroke averages of 72.33 and 74.30 respectively.
