FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University right-handed pitcher Katie Carnes has been named the Peach Belt Conference women’s softball Freshman of the Week for the week of Feb. 27-March 4.
A native of Pageland, S.C., Carnes appeared in relief in both of FMU’s games last week and earned two wins. She pitched nine innings and allowed only four hits and one earned run, while striking out seven. She also helped her own cause by going 4-for-6 at the plate and driving in two runs.
She batted 3-for-3 and pitched the final four innings of an 11-8 victory over the University of West Alabama. She followed that with five shutout innings and another hit and RBI in a 7-2 win over Brevard College.
For the season, she owns a 5-2 mark with a 2.30 earned run average. She has fanned 39 batters in 42.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting only .190 against her.
The 13-7 Patriots return to Peach Belt action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader at Lander University at 2 p.m. FMU will play host to Queens University of Charlotte for a twinbill on Thursday at 1 p.m. and will then host the Patriot Invitational Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Freedom Florence.
Carnes is a former All-State performer at Central High School.
