Weather changes FMU vs. UNCP baseball series
FLORENCE, SC – Forecasted rain for Saturday morning has altered this weekend’s Peach Belt Conference baseball series between 23rd-ranked Francis Marion University and local-rival UNC Pembroke.
The three-game series will now consist of a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. on FMU’s Cormell Field. General admission each day is $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID).
The Patriots are 22-11 overall and have won 10 of their last 12 games, while UNCP is 23-10 and has won 9 of 10, including five straight. Both squads are tied for fourth at 10-7 in the tightly-bunched PBC East Division standings.
Sophomore right-hander Jeffrey Stoner (4-2, 3.23 ERA) is FMU’s probable starter for Saturday, while junior righty Spencer Jordan (5-2, 2.85) and senior southpaw Matt Broderick (3-1, 1.99) are Sunday’s likely starters.
Senior infielder Brock McCallister leads the Patriots with a .372 average and 34 runs batted in, while ranking second in Division in total hits. Senior center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie, the reigning PBC Co-Player of the Year, is on a 13-for-20 tear over his last five games with nine runs scored and eight driven in.
Stoner ranks fifth nationally in total strikeouts, while Broderick is sixth in fewest walks issued per nine innings. As a staff, FMU ranks third nationally in fewest walks allowed per nine innings.
Francis Marion leads the all-time series 67-29-1. Both squads advanced to the NCAA Division II national tournament last year with FMU reaching the Southeast Regional Tournament title game.
The Patriot softball team (26-12, 4-6) will play a Peach Belt twinbill at eighth-ranked North Georgia College & State University (31-7, 5-3) on Saturday at noon.
Saturday’s weather has also changed the Francis Marion men’s and women’s tennis schedules. Saturday’s PBC match with nationally ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University has been postponed until Monday at 1 p.m. at Savannah’s Bacon Park. FMU will play at nationally ranked Flagler College on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both FMU squads are ranked 10th in the latest ITA Division II national poll. The Patriots men are 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while the women are 11-1 and 6-1.
Coming off its best finish of the 2011-12 campaign, the Patriot golf team will compete in Ole Miss’s BancorpSouth Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday, at the Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Miss. The 16-team field includes nationally ranked University of Central Florida and defending tournament champion University of South Alabama.
