Patriots earn third-straight Top 10 ranking in final baseball poll

FLORENCE, S.C. – For the third consecutive season, Francis Marion University has earned a Top-10 ranking in the final 2012 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II Top 30 poll as the Patriots are listed seventh.

FMU has appeared in the end-of-the-season national poll at the conclusion of each of the past eight seasons, and nine of the past 10. The final Top 10 ranking is the fourth ever for the Patriots, as FMU finished ninth in 2011, 10th in 2010, and sixth in 2006.

Francis Marion finished the 2012 year with a 40-18 record and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where the Patriots reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season. FMU has posted 40-win campaigns each of the past three seasons.

This week’s national ranking means the Patriots have appeared in 126 of the past 135 national polls dating back to the 2005 season. Francis Marion was ranked second in the 2011 pre-season poll and was then listed at sixth, seventh, 12th, 30th, unranked but receiving votes, 22nd, 23rd, 23rd, 14th, 20th, eighth, eighth, and sixth for four weeks.

The Division II national champions, West Chester University (46-10), sit atop the poll, which features four Peach Belt squads.
