FMU’s Faile & Ferguson earn Capital One Academic All-District honors

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University juniors Tristan Faile and Olivia Ferguson have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District III Softball Team.

Faile, a native of Lancaster, S.C., has a 3.77 GPA as a biology major, while Ferguson, a native of Roanoke, Va., is also a biology major with a 3.74 GPA. As first-team selections, they become eligible to earn Academic All-American honors.

As the Patriots’ third baseman, Faile led FMU with a .361 batting average, 14 doubles, six home runs, and a .578 slugging percentage. She also scored 27 runs, drove in 39 runs, while striking out only nine times in 177 plate appearances. She was selected as Francis Marion’s MVP for the 2012 campaign. 

Ferguson, a catcher, hit .283 with eight doubles, three home runs, and 17 RBIs, while throwing out 11 of 43 runners attempting to steal. She led the team with 12 sacrifice bunts and posted a .989 fielding percentage.

The two helped lead Francis Marion to a 31-20 record in 2012, the program’s twelfth 30-win campaign in the past 15 seasons.

Off the field, Faile is a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team selection. She is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society, has twice been named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, and appeared on the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll four times.

Ferguson is also a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and PBC All-Academic Team honoree. She is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, and has been selected to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll twice and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll four times.

To be eligible for the Capital One Academic program, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings.
