Francis Marion University infielder Stephen Tarkenton has been named to play in the 14th-annual Coastal Plain League All-Star Game. The contest will be held on Monday (July 23) at Historic Fleming Stadium in Wilson, N.C.
Tarkenton will start at third base for the American All-Star squad.
The Newnan, Ga., native plays for the Forest City Owls and is currently third in the CPL with a .371 batting average. In 34 contests this summer, he has registered 10 doubles, two home runs, 17 runs batted in, and 16 runs scored. He is fifth in the CPL with a .444 on-base percentage and is tied for third with 43 base hits. He also has a .509 slugging percentage and a .962 fielding percentage with only four errors in 106 chances at the hot corner.
Tarkenton was named the CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week for the week of July 2-8.
The CPL is a 14-team summer collegiate league with franchises in Virginia and both Carolinas.
Tarkenton batted .294 with 11 doubles and 37 RBIs as a junior this past spring for Francis Marion. He split time between first base and third base and helped lead the Patriots to a 40-18 record, a national Top-10 ranking, and a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where the Patriots reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season.
