FMU named among South's Best Universities for the 12th Consecutive Year

Francis Marion University has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report magazine as one of the South’s best regional universities earning it a spot in the 2013 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News Media Group.

Since 2001, U.S. News & World Report has ranked FMU among the South’s best universities.

“Once again we’re honored to be named in the top tier of America’s Best Colleges in the 2012 edition of the U.S. News & World Report,” said FMU President Fred Carter. “This ranking reflects the quality of our curriculum, teaching and scholarship and is yet another accolade for our esteemed faculty.”

As a regional university, FMU is listed among schools that provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs. The 625 universities in this category are ranked against members of their peer group in one of four geographic regions—North, South, Midwest, and West—because, in general, they tend to draw students most heavily from within the region.

U.S. News categorizes colleges and universities according to their mission, Carnegie classification, and geographic region. The rankings are based upon undergraduate academic reputation, graduation & retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, and alumni contributions.  The ranking formula gives greatest weight to academic reputation.

The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,600 schools nationwide, are available today at www.usnews.com/colleges and will also be published in the September issue of the U.S. News & World Report magazine, on newsstands beginning September 20.
