FMU Coalition to hold annual scholarship gala

Francis Marion University’s African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition (AAFSC) will hold its 12th annual scholarship gala on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The theme of this year’s event is “Continuing the Investment in Promising Futures.” The evening will begin with a reception in Ervin Dining Hall hosted by FMU President and Mrs. Luther F. Carter at 6:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person with proceeds going toward the group’s scholarship funds and functions.

The keynote speaker for the gala is Dr. John Keith III. He is a pediatrician at Eastern Carolina Pediatrics and a former chief of pediatrics at Carolinas Hospital Systems.  He is a native of Florence County and a graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School.  He is also a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and Duke University in Durham, N.C.

For the fourth year, the AAFSC Diversity Award will be presented to an FMU faculty or staff member who has made noteworthy efforts to promote and foster diversity.

“We welcome you to join us in celebrating diversity and honoring an employee who has promoted greater levels of understanding between individuals and groups who are culturally different,” said Howard Brown, president of the AAFSC. “We also invite the public to witness the positive impact the scholarships have had on our students’ academic success and the improved quality of life for their families.”

Ticket and additional information is available by calling Aneesa Licorish-Giles at (843) 661-1420.

The Coalition and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will also host a Black Heritage Month Program on Monday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. in McNair Science Building’s Chapman Auditorium. The speaker for this event is Chakisse Newton, Founder and President of Cardinal Consulting. The event is free and open to the public.
