Francis Marion University has been recognized as one of the "2013 Great Colleges to Work For®" by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The results, released in the Chronicle’s sixth annual report on the academic workplace, are based on a survey of more than 44,688 employees at 300 colleges and universities.

Rated highly across all 12 categories, FMU was also named a 2013 Honor Roll institution, a designation granted to only 42 of the colleges surveyed.

"The reputation of this institution has been built on the work of this faculty and staff," said FMU President Dr. Fred Carter. “And for the past decade or so, we have attempted to develop compensation and support services that adequately demonstrate our appreciation for what they do. We are all proud of this national distinction.”

FMU is among less than a third of the 300 institutions evaluated for "Great College to Work For" recognition.

FMU achieved honors in seven categories this year:
•       Collaborative Governance
•       Professional/Career Development Programs
•       Teaching Environment
•       Work/Life Balance
•       Confidence in Senior Leadership
•       Respect and Appreciation
•       Tenure Clarity and Process

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous "Best Places to Work" programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.

Great Colleges to Work For is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. For more information and to view all the results of the survey, visit The Chronicle's Web site at http://chronicle.com/AcademicWorkplace2013.
