Francis Marion University named to Victory Media Inc.'s Military Friendly Schools list

Francis Marion University has earned a place on the Military Friendly Schools® list. The list, published by Victory Media, bases its practices on the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

The 2014 Military Friendly Schools® list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The ratings are based on information cullied by a survey of thousands of American colleges and universities.

This is the second honor FMU has received today. U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked FMU as one of the South’s best regional universities for 13 consecutive years, earning it a spot in the 2014 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News Media Group.

As a military veteran himself, FMU President Dr. Fred Carter said he is especially honored that the university garnered the military distinction.

“We are pleased that Francis Marion is accessible to and supportive of military personnel who have served this country so selflessly,” said FMU President Dr. Fred Carter. “We will continue to identify ways to serve this distinguished constituency.”

Veterans represent 5 percent of the FMU student population.

Among the criteria used to determine inclusion in the guide were the flexibility of online learning options, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, support provided to the families of service members, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns, to name a few.

“Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows Francis Marion University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, vice president at Victory Media and a nine-year Navy Veteran. “The need for education is growing and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey results that comprise the 2014 list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria, and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country.

A full story and detailed list of 2014 Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools®, distributed in print and digital form in early October.
