FMU Trustees move to explore possibility of opening satellite campus in town of Mt. Pleasant, clean audit, election of officers

On Friday, Francis Marion University came one step closer to opening a satellite campus in the town of Mount Pleasant.

At its quarterly meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in favor of accepting the municipality's invitation to offer four-year At its quarterly meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in favor of authorizing FMU President Dr. Fred Carter to accept the municipality's invitation to work with the appropriate entities to offer an array of academic programs to its residents. 

FMU President Dr. Fred Carter said after careful consideration, the Board arrived at the decision that it would meet the needs of that community, with a focus on upper division students.

Possible degree offerings have not been decided but will likely include the RN to BSN program to address the growing need for health care professionals, and several business degrees, particularly those associate degree graduates who are in need of baccalaureate degrees.

The campus is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014, gradually adding programs over time.

The town will provide the facilities to house the new endeavor as part of the partnership and lease it to FMU for $1 per year.

In other business, for the 15th consecutive year, Francis Marion University has received a clean, unqualified opinion from its auditor.

The audit, which is conducted annually, examined the University’s financial statements for the past year, as well as procedures related to activities such as spending, borrowing and fundraising.  The audit found the University’s financial statements to be reliable, and that rules and procedures to safeguard public resources were effective. Within this financial audit, no acts that were possibly fraudulent or illegal were discovered, and there were no breaches of the corporate code of conduct or other sources of concern.

FMU is also pleased to announce the election of its new officers for the coming two years, effective Feb. 28, 2014: George C. McIntyre, owner and operator of McIntyre Realty Company, as chairman; Tim Norwood, global sales manager at ADP, president/owner of Victor’s Bistro, as vice-chairman; and Frank Elmore, founding shareholder/president at Elmore Goldsmith, PA, as secretary.
