FMU to kickoff 2nd Annual Dance Marathon to benefit children's hospital

The Francis Marion University community will dance the new year in to raise money for McLeod Children’s Hospital, an affiliate of the Children’s Miracle Network.

The public is also invited to participate in the university sponsored, Dance Marathon 2014 from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement involving college and high school students at more than 150 schools across the country, all raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in their community.

Organized by a student-run group created by the FMU Office of Student Affairs, this event serves as the kickoff of a two-month drive to raise funds to make medical treatment available for children whose families cannot afford it. According to Dance Marathon’s coordinator Jordan Tillar, ’14, though the primary purpose of the “I Dance Because…”, event is to raise funds, it is also meant to unite the FMU community.

“This is a cause that all of us can rally around, even those who are not on campus,” said Tillar.

The marathon will consist of students, organizations, faculty, staff and community members standing and dancing for eight hours in the Smith University Center Commons. Aside from the actual dancing, the Dance Marathon will also feature several other events.

These student organizers spend a year learning invaluable leadership and life skills while raising funds and interacting with children’s hospital patients and families. The year culminates with a 12-40 hour long event where the students stay on their feet through dancing, games and entertainment in celebration of the total amount raised that year.
