Acclaimed baritone Robert Sims to make encore appearance at an FMU venue

On Jan. 26, lyric baritone and spiritual historian Robert Sims will make his way to the historical district of downtown Florence for his second performance in the area in less than one year.

Francis Marion University will welcome Sims to the Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. for an afternoon of African American spirituals delivered in song and theatrics. A favorite at the 2013 Arts International event, Sims was added to the lineup for the PAC’s new “Community Concert Series”, a succession of Sunday afternoon concerts built around affordability, said Laura Sims, director of the PAC. Tickets for each show in the series are only $5.

“While we already offer great value, we recognize that quality entertainment can be expensive and tickets a challenge for some,” said Laura Sims, director of the FMU PAC. “Our goal is to make first-rate performances like that of Robert Sims available to the broader Pee Dee region.”

Tickets for the performance on Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. are on sale now at the PAC box office. The tickets are $5 and may be purchased during regular box office hours (M-F, Noon to 5 p.m.). Contact the box office for more details at 843-661-4444. Groups are welcome.

Sims is a Gold Medal winner of the American Traditions Competition who has been hailed by critics for his rich tone, energetic performances, and convincing stage presence. He has been highly praised for his moving interpretations of African American spirituals, and has given numerous recitals of them throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. He has appeared with many orchestras in the U.S., and toured Japan with the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra where he was featured in a nationally televised performance of Bernstein's Opening Prayer.

The next event in the Community Series is the March 2 Concert by Bishop Michael Blue and The Tribe. Tickets for Community Series events go on sale approximately one month prior to the performance date.
