Florence native and FMU alum named university legal counsel

Florence attorney Jonathan Edwards has been hired as Francis Marion University’s new general counsel.

Edwards, a Florence native and an FMU alum, is a graduate of the Charleston School of Law. He is an experienced criminal and civil litigator at both the Parham Law Firm, LLC of Florence, and at his own firm.

Edwards replaces James G. “Jim” McGee, III who was recently appointed as a family court judge. Edwards’ appointment is effective Monday, Feb. 17.

FMU President Dr. Fred Carter said Edwards was a superb addition to the FMU staff.

"Jonathan Edwards is a knowledgeable and energetic attorney and will serve the university well,” said Carter. “And, I’m delighted that he is an alumnus of this institution.”

Prior to returning to Florence to practice, Edwards was a law clerk for the Charleston County Public Defender’s Office, a research assistant at the Charleston School of Law and legal aid at the Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services.  He was also a research assistant for the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense in Columbia.

Edwards received the B.S. in psychology from FMU in 2009. He has earned several honors and achievements for his pro bono work in Charleston and founded the Charleston School of Law Pee Dee Alumni Chapter. He is president of that group. He is also a member of the Florence Rotary Club.

Edwards’ wife Lee Ann is a kindergarten teacher at McLaurin Elementary School.
