Longtime FMU trustee and brother of former president dies at the age 87

FMU community mourns the loss of W.C. Stanton

WC StantonW.C. Stanton, a nearly 20-year member of the FMU Board of Trustees, died Monday, April 7. Stanton was the brother of former FMU President Dr. Thomas Stanton (1983 - 1994).

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m., Thursday, April 10, at First Baptist Church in Cheraw. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 9, from 5-7 p.m. at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw.

A native of Dillon County, Stanton moved to Cheraw at an early age. He is a U.S. Army veteran. He and his wife, the former Sara Margaret McDougald have three sons and four grandchildren.

He was the founder of Stanton Quilting Co. and served as the president until his retirement.

Stanton served as the chairman of the board of trustees for Chesterfield General Hospital and was also a member of the board of directors of the S.C. Hospital Trustees Association. He also served on the board of the S.C. Movers Conference, an affiliate of the S.C. Trucking Association. Stanton received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from FMU in 2002.
