Bach is Back at the PAC

Bach is back this month at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center.

Francis Marion University’s Department of Fine Arts and the university’s Music Industry Program will celebrate the genius of the legendary composer with the inaugural “Bach Fest Florence” June 13 and 15 at the FMU PAC.

Tickets are just $5 each night and available at the PAC (843.661.4444, or in person, M-F, Noon to 5 p.m.). Seating is limited in the 110-seat  Black Box Theater the show on June 13. The June 15 show is in the PAC’s Mainstage. All seats for both shows are Bach seats.

The combined FMU departments, with an assist from members of the Florence Symphony Orchestra and other local musicians will present two different concerts featuring the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Even the rare harpsichord – a period instrument that plays a critical role in many Bach pieces – will make an appearance for the performances.

Dr. Terry Roberts, director of FMU’s Music Industry program, and Dr. Paul Thompson, assistant professor of Music and director of choral activities, are directing the performances.

The June 13 event will feature the Cantata No. 55 for tenor solo and chamber orchestra and Cantata No. 209 for soprano and chamber orchestra.

Also on the program: French Suite No. 5 in G major for keyboard and works for A cappella voices. On June 15 the concert program is Bach Cantata no. 4 for soloist, choir and orchestra.

The South Carolina Dance Theater will also be featured on this piece. The program also includes Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C major and Bach Cantata No. 140, the famous “Sleeper Wake” cantata.

Soloists from across the country will be featured along with Thompson, a superb tenor who joined the FMU faculty last year. The choir will feature local singers and students. Members of the Florence Symphony Orchestra will comprise the orchestra.
