FLORENCE -- Friends of Francis Marion University gave a check for a little more than $11,000 to university president Dr. Luther F. “Fred” Carter during a check presentation ceremony on Sept. 7.
Frances Elmore, former FMU registrar, on behalf of the Francis Marion Future Fund, presented the check. Established in 1997 by area supporters as a way of collecting and holding gifts on behalf of FMU, contributors felt it was time to give the money to the university.
When the fund was established, some community supporters of FMU were troubled by perceived changes in the direction of the university.
Now, pleased with the university’s direction and Dr. Carter’s leadership, the contributions were given to FMU for use as student scholarships and in other designated ways.
This amount is “nowhere in the ballpark” of what FMU will be receiving, Marvin Lynch, former FMU admissions director, said.
The check represents the dedication, commitment and love of many people, he added.
