FLORENCE – Robert W. Williams Jr., President and CEO of Pee Dee Electric Cooperative Inc., and James A. Brown Jr., President of SMS Management Inc., both of Florence, have been appointed by Gov. Jim Hodges to serve as members on the Francis Marion University Board of Trustees.
The appointments are being made on an interim basis, pending elections to be held in the General Assembly during the 2000 legislative year. Williams’ appointment is a replacement for M. Russell Holliday Jr. who resigned from the board after being appointed by the Governor to the state’s Department of Natural Resources Board. Brown’s appointment fills a seat left vacant upon the recent death of Florence resident and long-time board member Peter D. Hyman.
Williams serves on the Francis Marion University Foundation Board as treasurer, on the Florence County United Way Board, on the Florence County Progress Partnership Board. He received the Order of the Palmetto, one of South Carolina’s highest civilian awards in 1995 and is the president of Pee Dee Electricom, Inc. and Pee Dee Service Corporation.
Brown, a native of Marion County and a 1977 FMU graduate, holds a B.A. degree in political science, and served from 1988-98 as chairman of the Florence Airport Commission. He serves on the South Carolina Citizens Judicial Screening Committee and on the South Carolina Medicine Waiver Task Force.
