FLORENCE -- Peter King, assistant professor of biology at Francis Marion University, co-authored an article in the latest issue of Copeia. The article is titled “Ontogenetic changes in the resistance of bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) to the venom of copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix) and cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus). According to King, the study was an exciting one, particularly the milking of venom from the feisty cottonmouths. King received his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.
The following Francis Marion University faculty and staff members have been promoted: Sue Mills has been promoted to assistant professor of music, from instructor. Mills has been the FMU choral director since 1986, and a faculty member since 1979. A native of Birmingham, Ala., she earned the bachelor of music degree in voice from Samford University and a master of music degree from Florida State University.
Promoted from assistant professor to associate professor were: Kenneth D. Kitts, Ph.D. University of South Carolina, political science, employed at FMU since 1987; Kevin J. Lasher, Ph.D. University of Georgia, political science, employed at FMU since 1993; Xiaoqun (David) Xu, Ph.D. Columbia University, history, employed at FMU since 1993; A. Glen Gourley Jr., M.F.A. University of Mississippi, theatre arts, speech, employed at FMU since 1985; and Jeffrey Anastasi, Ph.D. State University of New York (Binghamton), psychology, employed at FMU since 1995.
The following FMU faculty members have been promoted from associate professor to full professor: C. Allan Lockyer, D.A. University of Northern Colorado, geography, employed at FMU since 1986; Kathleen S. Pompe, M.F.A. Pennsylvania State University, art/photography, employed at FMU since 1989; R. Sethfield Smith, Ph.D. Louisiana State University, physics, employed at FMU since 1989; and Kenneth B. Williams, Ph.D. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, chemistry, employed at FMU since 1985.
Also, Jane P. Quick, M.A.T. University of South Carolina, math instructor at FMU since 1982, has been named the coordinator of the mathematics lab. M. Barry O’Brien, associate professor of economics, Ph.D. University of South Carolina, has been named the coordinator of the FMU Masters of Business Administration program. O’Brien has been employed at FMU since 1988. Eunice Ward, B.A. degree in English from FMU, has been named assistant director of University Relations. Employed at FMU since 1983, the Marion native, previously served as publications director in the FMU University Relations office.
