FMU golf tournament scores $10,500 for scholarships

FLORENCE---The Francis Marion University Annual Fund Golf Classic, held May 7 at the Country Club of South Carolina, raised $10,500 for scholarships.

The 18-hole captain’s choice event annually raises funds to support the university’s scholarship campaign. One hundred eight golfers, paired in four-person teams, competed for cash and prizes.

All participants were treated to a post-tournament cookout, sponsored by Santee Cooper.  Other major sponsors of the tournament were CP&L, Roche Carolina and Pepsi.  King Cadillac-Oldsmobile-GMC sponsored a hole-in-one contest, offering a 1999 GMC Sonoma pick-up truck.  Floyd & Greene Jewelers of Aiken also sponsored a hole-in-one contest to give away a Rolex watch.  Gift certificates were awarded on every hole and Southeastern Pension Management of Columbia sponsored a putting contest.

Webb Jones Jr.; Jones Auto Wrecking, King Cadillac-Oldsmobile-GMC, Inc.; McAngus, Goudelock & Courie, LLP; Redbone Alley; Shealy Dental Clinic/Dr. Jim Schuster; 60 Minute Cleaners; SMS,Inc.; Southeastern Pension Management; Southeastern Steel Company; Vinson Law Firm, PA; Weatheford Aluminum Products; West Gate Cleaners; and Williams, Gee & Company, PA.  IRIX Pharmaceuticals and Tim Boan provided gift certificates.

The Carolina Bank team, comprised of Rick Beasley, Kelly Williamson, John Mathers and Todd Stewart, took the low gross score award, followed by the A.G. Edwards team, comprised of Stephen Jones, Sonny Slaughter, Jay Saleeby and Billy Houck.

Taking top honors in the low net score was an FMU team, comprised of Jim Von Frank, Wayne Schritchfield, William Coleman and Jack Goebel, followed by the Carolinas Hospital team, comprised of David McClellan, Dr. Tommy Cox, John Turner, and Randy Seif.

Hole winners for the day, in order of holes were Sammy Rodgers, Webb Jones, Kelly Williamson, John Turner, Sonny Slaughter, James Harrell, Joe Carson, Mark D’Amico, Mike Johnson, Eddie Love, Ward Avinger, Billy Houck, Kelly Williamson, Charles Miller, Johnny Mathers, Hal Campbell, David Johnson and George McIntyre.  Each received a $100 gift certificate, redeemable at the CCSC Pro Shop.
