FLORENCE, S.C. – Cross country runner Paul Chokota of Florence, a product of West Florence High School, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Francis Marion University and run for the Patriots this fall.
Chokota is 6-1 and weighs 154 pounds. He ran for coaches Billy Garey and Richard Brobbons at West Florence during the 1997 fall season. Prior to attending West Florence, he attended Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C.
After an undefeated regular season as a senior, he placed first in the 5-AAAA Region meet and then seventh at the 1997 state AAAA meet. In addition to earning all-region and all-state honors, he set the Marlboro County High School course record.
He also placed first at the AAU state championships, 17th at the Footlocker Southeast Regionals, and 22nd at the AAU national meet.
A three-time all-region selection, he has been invited, along with 39 other top runners from the United States, to participate in the “City to Surf” race in Sydney, Australia.
Francis Marion placed fifth at last fall’s Peach Belt Athletic Conference championship meet with a squad that did not include any seniors. FMU went on to finish 10th at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Meet.
