FLORENCE – Donations to the Thomas Wiett Sills Scholarship at Francis Marion University have exceeded $10,000.
The scholarship honors Sills, who served at FMU from June, 1980, until his death in May, 1998. Sills served as chairman of the education department from 1980-88 and dean of the FMU school of education from 1988-1996. He was named the Ashpy P. Lowrimore Professor of Education on July 1, 1993.
Family, friends, and colleagues established the Tom Sills Scholarship in 1998. The scholarship is given to either a part-time student employed as a teacher’s aide in the public school system who is pursuing a professional teacher certificate, or to a student who has been admitted to the teacher education program at FMU. The award is made each fall and spring during the students’ “student-teaching” phase.
Additional contributions may be made to the scholarship. For more information on giving to the scholarship, call the FMU Office of Advancement at 843-661-1225. For information about the scholarship, call the FMU Office of Financial Assistance at 843-661-1190.
